Friedrich Hayek; Free Society = Equal Treat

There is all the difference in the world between treating people equally and attempting to make them equal. While the first is the condition of a free society, the second means as De Tocqueville describes it, 'a new form of servitude'.
 ***********************
* A claim for equality of material position can be met only by a government with totalitarian powers.

*A society that does not recognize that each individual has values of his own which he's entitled to follow, can have no respect for the dignity of the individual, and cannot really know freedom.
