Maya Angelou Poet, Writer and Activist dies at age 86
One of America's leading literary voices of the last 50 years, Angelou was best-known for her 1969 memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
It was the first of seven volumes of autobiography that traced her life after the poverty, abuse, oppression, violence and segregation of her childhood, she became a singer, a dancer, cocktail waitress, prostitute and an actress before beginning her writing career. in the Deep South in the 1930s.
Angelou was also a prominent civil rights activist and a friend of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.
